Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is another procedure which is becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Nothing gives a better appearance of health than a bright, white smile. Discolouration of the teeth occurs over time from drinking tea and coffee and from smoking, but it need not be permanent.

At Baltinglass Dental, we provide a range of teeth whitening options which ensure that you get the best treatment for you along with the expert knowledge to ensure that it is carried out safely and effectively. Teeth whitening is a treatment which involveds minimal discomfort and can deliver great results in a short space of time.

Day Whitening

Day whitening is a whitening gel produced by Philips Healthcare. It is used at home in custom-made whitening trays.

The trays are worn for 30-45 minutes each day for approximately two weeks.

Day whitening is ideal for people who find it difficult to sleep with their whitening trays overnight and is a very effective means of whitening.

Night Whitening

Night Whitening gel is made by POLANITE which is worn overnight in custom-made trays for approximately two weeks.

Home-whitening is very effective but the teeth may darken slightly over time. The whitening gel can then be used to top-up the whitening for around two-three days to regain those sparkly white pearls.

Why have your teeth whitened by the dentist?

There are so many whitening options now available on the market. You can purchase whitening pastes at the chemist, have laser whitening carried out at the beauty therapist, or even purchase whitening products online. Why would you have your teeth whitened at the dentist when they charge so much more for the service?

The European directive on tooth whitening came into force in 2012.

The aim of the directive is to ensure that teeth whitening is as safe as possible.

The directive states:

“ANYONE WHO WANTS TO HAVE THEIR TEETH WHITENED SHOULD HAVE THEIR TEETH EXAMINED BY A DENTIST FIRST TO ENSURE WHITENING IS SAFE FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL”.

The active ingredient in whitening products is hydrogen peroxide. Only dentists are allowed to sell products containing over 0.1 percent and up to 6 percent hydrogen peroxide. Products containing over 6 percent hydrogen peroxide are illegal.

This means that tooth whitening is safest when carried out by a dentist. Products purchased elsewhere may either be ineffective (as they contain a very low level of hydrogen peroxide) or possibly illegal and unsafe to use.

When whitening is carried out by a dental professional there is no risk to the health of the tooth in the long term. For the safest most effective tooth whitening have your teeth whitening carried out by a dentist.
